Malaysia – Team Powerhouse Fitness, Jalan Tanjong Tokong, Penang

Location: Team Powerhouse Fitness – 4th floor, Island Plaza, no 118 Jalan Tanjong Tokong, 10470 Penang. Tel: 048900370,

As a result of a niggling elbow problem, I decided to try and see a physic whilst in Malaysia. This led me to the Team Powerhouse Fitness gym which was a great find. It is about a 10 minute walk away from the Straits Quay. Open since 1 February 2015, Team Powerhouse Fitness is a full western standard gym with all the equipment you could want.

Review: The gym also runs classes for all levels and offers personal training and physiotherapy appointments which I will discuss below. The gym has modern machines, up to date cardio equipment and a functions strength room upstairs.

The gym has the following equipment:
  • Dumbbells up to 50kg.
  • A Squat rack and olympic bars
  • Smith machine
  • barbell benchpress,
  • incline benchpress,
  • Crossover cables,
  • lat pull down,
  • Leg press
  • Leg curl machine
  • Leg extension machine
  • Bicept machines
  • Tricet machines
  • running machines,
  • cycling machines,
  • cross trainers.
  • Rowing machines
  • A fitness studio for classes
  • Battle ropes
  • Medicine balls
  • Climbing frame
  • Punch bag
  • Sauna
  • TRX
  • Kettle bells

The gym changing rooms are also of a high standard and water fountains are available.

Prices: A day pass for this gym will cost you 35 ringgets , (about £7)
However, a week pass will only cost you 75  ringgets (about £15)

The gym sells cans of pre-made pre-workout but no protein, so remember to bring a shake with you if you can.

PhysiotherapyI was able to get a same day appointment with Enrico Blasutto, who was one of the trainers and the physio at Team Powerhouse Fitness. For one hours treatment the cost was 90 ringgets. After giving me an initial examination, Enrico treated me with 20 mins of electro muscle stimulation, before applying and iced elbow pack for a further 20 mins and then some acupressure on the muscle in questions. The total treatment time was 1 hour. All of Enrico’s equipment looked up to date and his treatment room was clean and in good condition.

Who is this gym for? I would highly recommend to everyone looking to train properly. Whilst I was in there I saw a mixed clientele, both in terms of gender, age and ability.  I would especially recommend this gym to anyone looking to lift heavy or perform heavy compound movements. I would also highly recommend the physio treatment here.

Tip: One of the signs outside the building still says Fitness First, but don’t worry, you are in the right place.

Malaysia – Straits Quay, Tanjong Tokong, Penang (Air B&B)

Location: The Straits Quay development is a huge development in Tanjong Tokong, which is one of the wealthier neighbourhoods in Penang. The development consisted of houses built around a central shopping mall complex, which housed a supermarket, clothes shops, and places to eat. The complex also houses a sports shop, which sold everything from gym gloves to compression wear and trainers. If you need anything for your training, this is a great place to get it.

The complex also boasts three rooftop infinity pools, a gym and a tennis court. All are free to use and are accessed using a swipe card.

ReviewThe gym itself is air conditioned, but pretty tiny and basic,

The gym has the following equipment:
  • Running machine,
  • cross trainer,
  • cycling machine.
  • dumbbells up to 8kg.
  • bench
  • yoga mats
  • multi-gym
    • chest press
    • lat pulldown
    • seated row
    • chest fly
    • Leg extensions

Who is this gym for? – In all honesty this gym is only really good if you want a cardio workout or is you are a beginner looking to train light.  If you area a seasoned gym goer, or anyone looking to build or maintain existing muscle mass then I would recommend Power Gym (see next post)

Tip: The gym is next to the largest and most beautiful of the three roof top pools. This is great for a swim after a work out. It is also next to the roof top tennis courts if the mood takes you. Also, you will want to bring your own water!

Malaysia – The Royale Bintang Hotel, Penang

Location: The Royale Bintang Hotel, Penang, Malaysia

Review: The gym at the Royale Bintang Hotel is located next to their swimming pool in a small air conditioned room. The gym is for hotel guests only and is accessed using a keycode given on check in. The gym provides free filtered water and towels for free but no other products are available.

This gym contains:

  • Running machines
  • cycling, cross trainer
  • Multi gym
    • Leg press
    • Leg extension
    • Low Row
    • Lat pulldown
    • Chest press
    • Chest fly
  • Adjustable Bench
  • Up to 10kg dumbbells
  • Yoga mats
  • Swiss balls

Who is this gym for? – This gym is suitable for all levels, however anyone looking to train with heavy weights or olympic lifts should probably give this one a miss. The lack of heavy dumbbells made working out here difficult.

Tip: The gym is open until late, but that does mean that it is next to the dessert station during dinner time. Prepare for some dirty looks as other people pile into the ice cream as you do your crunches!

Who is this gym for? This gym is suitable for everyone and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. However, anyone looking to train seriously may struggle in this gym which is a little basic.

The Regalia Residence also have a rooftop infinity swimming pool on 37th floor. There are also showers and a steam room.  There is also a skybar restaurant where you can get an amazing post workout steak.

Pro tip: The Regalia Residence are also close to central station where they have many GNC stores. 500g of protein power is about £25 and a protein bar like Quests about £3 each. Stock up.
