Review: Having decided to visit Birmingham to see my brother, I was lucky enough to be taken to train in Ultimate Fitness, which turned out to be one of the best gyms I have ever trained in. The gym is massive and set over two floors, with machines and free weights grouped by body part, making it really easy to isolate one muscle group or body part. The basic set up of the gym is cardio, chest, arms, shoulders on the first floor and legs, back and changing rooms up on the second,

This is a real lifter’s gym and a lot of thought has gone into the selection of the equipment and the set up of the gym. For example, the gym has two full sets of dumbbells, numerous adjustable benches and so many squat and power racks that I lost count. Dotted around the gym are weight lifting straps, belts and band for people to use. The emphasis really is on providing a great place to train.

This gym has a ton of equipment, including:

  • dumbbells upto 60 kgs
  • Adjustable benches with company branding.
  • Flat bench
  • Incline bench
  • Decline bench
  • 2 x smith machines
  • Cables
  • Multiple squat racks
  • Deadlift platforms
  • Olympic Barbells
  • Thick grip Barbells
  • Hex bar
  • Easy bar
  • Hammer curl bar
  • Plates upto 50kgs
  • Fixed weight straight bars upto 50kgs
  • Chest press machine
  • Incline chest press machine
  • Booty builder machines
  • Lateral raise machines
  • Pec dec
  • Chest fly / rear felt machine
  • Seated low row machine
  • Lying horizontal bench for barbell rows
  • Vintage bodybuilding pullover machine
  • Lat pulldown machine
  • Seated high row machine
  • Bicep curl machine
  • Tricep extension machine
  • Leg press
  • Leg extension
  • Leg curls
  • Sleds
  • Chains of various sizes
  • Rubber bands
  • Weightlifting belts
  • Weightlifting straps
  • Dips belts
  • Padded floor area
  • Foam rollers
  • Swiss balls
  • Abs wheels
  • Abs weighted crunch machine
  • treadmills
  • Cross trainers
  • Steppers
  • Static bikes
  • Rowing machine
The gyms cardio equipment is found on the first floor of the gym, set along the length of the floor to ceiling windows looking out over the street, meaning you can do a little people watching to pass the time. The gym also has loads of cool artwork to help keep you motivated during your workout.
Up on the second floor has gyms with showers, toilets and lockers. When I visited, they were clean and in great condition. They also have hair dryers and hair straighteners – even in the men’s changing rooms!
As well as all of this cool equipment, the gym also has a Cafe and chill out area serving meals, drinks and protein-based snacks and bars. You can grab a cold drink or a bite to eat after your workout and chill out on their beanbags.

Who is this gym for? Apparently, the old ultimate fitness was very much a hardcore bodybuilder’s gym. The new location is an attempt to make a more mainstream gym without giving up its bodybuilding roots. Honestly, this is one of the best-equipped gyms I have ever trained in and the atmosphere here was great. I could see how beginners might find environment a little intimidating as most of the guys training here are pretty huge, but I urge you to get over any sense of trepidation and try this place out. I get the impression you would learn a lot here, even if just through osmosis.

Tips: The cafe here sells protein shakes, snacks, meals, drinks and even equipment like belts and gloves, so its a great place to stock up if you are visiting Birmingham!
