I was actually in Riga for a friends stag do over the long bank holiday weekend. This meant 3 days of pretty heavy drinking, late nights and a total break from the usual routine. It also meant that by the Sunday morning, I was in desperate need of a workout.
Having gone to bed at 4am, the 9.30am start was pretty rough. But the plan was to hit the beach at 11am and I was damned if I wasn’t going to get a pump before we hit the sand. Having unsuccessfully tried to wake the only other reveller silly enough to have expressed an interest in coming with me, I downed a pre-workout so strong I am sure it has meth in it and headed out to MyFitness Matīss.
What I found was the newest gym in Riga, and one of the best gyms I have found in my global gym travels. Everything in this gyms was new, clean and working. The place was immaculate and stocked with just about every gym toy that you could imagine. There are literally so many weight machines in this place, I don’t have time to list them all. Whatever your training modality, you will find it here. They even had one machine I have never seen before. Anyone have any idea what this is?

I made a note of as much of the equipment as I could, it included:
  • Dumbells up to 50kgs
  • Various adjustable benches
  • Decline barbell bench
  • Incline barbell bench
  • 2 x flat barbell bench
  • 3 squat racks
  • 2 smith machines
  • Dip/ab crunch/pull up frame
  • Lat pull down
  • Seated low row
  • Easy bars
  • Hammer curl bars
  • Preacher curl bench
  • Fixed weight straight bars
  • Literally too many weights machines to count.
  • Pull up bars
  • Dips bars
  • Kettle bells
  • Lower back extension bench
  • Functional strength training bars
  • Battle Ropes
  • Punch bag
  • Tires
  • Slam balls
  • Weighted sled
  • TRX
  • Resistance bands
  • Bosu balls
  • Medicine Balls
  • Treadmills
  • Bodyweight treadmills
  • Rowing machines
  • Exercise bikes
  • Seated exercise bikes
  • Lockers
  • Showers
  • Toilets and changing rooms
  • Sauna

The price was great too, even if the pricing structure was a little weird. One workout for 3 Euros is amazing value, but I have no idea what the justification for charging 13 Euros for the second session is. Either way, its great value for a gym of the quality.

The mens changing rooms were immaculate and the shower and sauna were both new and functional. The lockers use a padlock system, so remember to bring your own. When I was in this gym there were far more women training here than men, but that seemed to be true of Riga in general.

Who is this gym for? There is something here for everyone. The gym is professional and welcoming and I would recommend this gym to everyone visiting Riga. Even the views from the treadmill were interesting and allowed for a little people watching.

20180526_181521.jpgTips: You can buy protein or premade caffeinated drinks at the reception in the gym. But if you want something more substantial there is actually a supplement store in the Bērnu Pasaule shopping mall. Its by the side entrance on the ground floor and its called Vitamins. 20180526_181431.jpg

They have an awesome selection of preworkouts, proteins, bars, weight gainers and other healthy snacks from both eastern and western europe.  The owner really knows his stuff too! They also sell online, you can check out their store here!
